Italiante
Situated on a hill northwest of the Platte River. The Highlands overlooked the city. In fact, it was orignially a city by it's own right. The Potter-Highlands neighborhoods is considered to be one of Denver's oldest neighborhood. Many of the building permits are no longer in exsistance. Water tap permits useful in dating structures in other areas of Denver, are of little value since most of Denver's early buildings relied on artisen well water.

Subdivisions that comprised of "The Highlands" include the Scottish Highlands, Highland Park, West Highland and Potter-Highlands. The silver crash of 1893 forced the town in 1896 to annex into Denver.

Architecture Designs
The predominant architecture designs in the Potter-Highlands subdivision features the elegant Vernacular Wood Frame and Italiante Buildings. The 1890's brought us during the Victorian era of nostalgic homes which include Queen Anne, Neo-Classical Revival, Stick, Classical Cottage, Dutch Classical Revival, Prairie, Colonial Revival, Tudor and Terrace

Following the tradition of the Craftsman movement, which stressed utility and simplicity, the bungalow is easily recognizable with its one-and-one-half story, wood or masonry structure with a gently pitched, front or gable roof. An additional gable occasionally covers an open porch and battered or “elephantine” porch piers or thick columns usually support the overhang.

Single Family Residences generally range from approximately 500sq/ft to 2000 sq/ft. Basements do exist in these older homes and through improvements and updating have increased the finished sq/ft to 4000 in some cases . Many of the homes merely have only crawl spaces . Multi-family housing "duplexes" are quite common in the area.

The Potter-Highlands Most Notable Architects
The most notable architects that contributed to the creation and look we see in this historical Denver suburb are William Come, Varian Ernest Phillip , Fredrick Sterner, Edward Kreiss, Hoyt and Hoyt.
